Add Options to Products

If you sell products that have variants (like colors and sizes), you can list them as one base product with options. As a result, store visitors may select the options they prefer on the product page. These product options are shown in the order details.

With the help of product options, you can also:

  • offer extras, like gift wrapping;

  • ask buyers to upload a file for ordered product/service;

  • offer multiple selections to configure the final product;

  • and more.

Create Options

To add options like Size and Color to your products:

  1. Go to the store Control Panel.

  2. Click Catalog, and then click Products.

  3. Open the product page you want to edit.

  4. Go to the Options tab.

  5. Click +Add New Option to add an option and its parameters.

  6. Add the name of the option, for example, Size.

  7. Select the input type. Radio Buttons work best for Size.

  8. Click +Add New Selection and add all values of the option. Add as many new selections as you need and specify whether they affect the base product price or not.

  9. Select the default option. If your option requires a customer selection, the Default column is hidden.

  10. If customers often order products with your default options, you may allow customers to add a product to their cart with default options with the Buy Now button. This setting is available in the Store Menu > Settings > General > Cart & Checkout tab.

  11. Save the changes.

Repeat the above steps to add more options (for example, color), if needed.

Option Types

You can use different option types to help customers select a product:

  • Drop-down list. Allow selection of one value from multiple choices. We suggest drop-down lists for a compact view of many choices.

  • Radio buttons. Allow selecting one value from multiple choices.

  • Date Picker. An input box with a popup calendar to select a date for product/service.

  • Text Field and Text Area. Input text fields where your customers can type any text for a product.

  • Check boxes. Allow selection of several options at once. For example, pizza toppings.

  • Upload file. Allows customers to attach files to the product they order.

You can provide a detailed description of every product option to your customers with the help of the Size Chart & Options Descriptions app for the StoreFront. This allows for extra information about options on a product page. You could include a size chart, graphics illustrating option choices, detailed characteristics, useful links, and more.

Required Options

To ensure customers select an option, use the Require customer selection option with drop-down lists and radio buttons. With this option checked, a customer cannot add a product to their cart without selecting an option.

Note

  • Check boxes cannot be required.

  • If you make an option required and add a price modifier to the default option, the price modifier is added to the base product price in the product list.

Use Price Modifiers

With price modifiers, you can increase or decrease the base product price depending on options. For example, a cotton t-shirt may cost $10, while an organic cotton t-shirt costs $12. If a customer selects an option with a price modifier, they will see the updated price on the product page.

Price modifiers can be assigned to drop-down list, check box, or radio button option types.

To add price modifiers:

  1. Go to the Store Menu, click Catalog, and then click Products.

  2. Open the product page you want to edit.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Select how the price modifier should adjust the price.

  5. Select whether the modification adjusts the price as an absolute amount or as a percentage.

  6. Set the amount.

  7. Save the changes.

Product options may increase or decrease the price of a product, but they do not have their own quantity of SKU. To track the inventory of product options, we recommend product variations.
